RD 3 Premier League Tuesday 24th of March 2009 13:39
Eastern Suburbs 0
Mt Gravatt 1 (R Hastings 3’)
H/T 0-1
Mt Gravatt bounced back from their loss last week, defeating Eastern Suburbs 1-0 at Heath Park. It
was the second loss in a row for the home side whose defence was caught square in just the 3rd
minute of the game when the first and only goal was scored. After Eastern Suburbs lost
possession in the middle of the park, poor marking and a great cross allowed a through ball to
leave their keeper one-on-one with Mt Gravatt player Rhys Hastings, who made no mistake.
A penetrating run in the 29th minute by Eastern Suburbs player Justin Geible saw the team come
close to scoring but the shot was saved by the Mt Gravatt keeper. A quick follow up by Darren
Wilson was also saved.
In the 57th minute, Mt Gravatt continued their domination with Rhys Hastings rolling a clever shot
just wide of the post. Determined not to go down without fight, Justin Geible dispossessed Garrath
McPherson on the edge of the box and drilled a hard and low cross which narrowly escaped
Darren Wilson at the back post.
As the game wore on, Easts failed to make any other opportunities to equalise the score. Mt
Gravatt coach Karl Herdle praised his teams’ performance but believed the second half left a lot to
be desired. “We had plenty of chances to score more goals but didn’t follow through,” Herdle said.
Eastern Suburbs coach Daniel Wright was disappointed with the result. “We played poorly in all
areas of the field. We didn’t dominate anywhere or ever really look like we were going to score,”
Wright said. Wright believes it is difficult to gauge the competition because his team has only
recently been promoted to the Premier League. “I think we over estimated our players’ ability and
under estimated the opposition we would face. We need to fix that quickly or it is going to be a
difficult year,” Wright said.
Mt Gravatt Coach Karl Herdle thinks Easts are doing well considering their recent introduction to
the competition. “The players are obviously very fit, Danny is doing a great job. It takes time for
new players to gel and they have very good spirits,” Herdle said.

Round 20 Review Thursday 14th of August 2008 16:33
Premier League - Fixture 20 Review

Rochedale Rovers claimed consecutive Premier League titles with a 2-0 victory over North Pine on Saturday night. The win, coupled with Peninsula’s loss to the Strikers puts Rovers 7 points in front with only two games to play. The Strikers’ win leaves them only one point behind Peninsula and gives them a boost heading into the semi-finals as they will be up against Power. Mt Gravatt put paid to any lingering hopes Brisbane Olympic had of avoiding the relegation play-off spot with a 2-1 win over Pine Rivers, who now are out of the semi-final race. Taringa Rovers’ convincing win over Olympic has consigned the Goodwin Park boys to finishing 2nd last at best. In the Sunday games, Brisbane City and Souths Utd fought out a 0-0 stalemate, a result that keeps City 4 points ahead of Souths in the race for the remaining semi-final spot while Brisbane FC Wolves moved equal with Souths with their win over Mitchelton which all but relegates the Mustangs.

Points to date:
Rochedale Rovers 49, Peninsula Power 42, Brisbane Strikers 41, Brisbane City 32, Souths United 28, Brisbane FC Wolves 28, North Pine 25*, Taringa Rovers 25*, Pine Rivers United 24, Mt Gravatt 22, Brisbane Olympic 13, Mitchelton 8
* One match in hand

North Pine 0 Rochedale Rovers 2 (T Urabe, C Tabulo)
Half Time: 2-0
Rochedale Rovers wrapped up its third Brisbane Premier League championship with a deserved 2-nil victory against North Pine at Underwood Park on Saturday night. A 20th minute strike from midfielder Taro Urabe gave the home side a 1-0 lead before striker Carl Tabulo put his side ahead 2-0 with a sensational left foot shot five minutes from half time.

The two first half goals were enough to see off a belated challenge from North Pine who was desperate for victory to keep its semi final hopes alive. Rochedale’s win followed up the club’s premiership victory last season under coach Kieran Cooper.

Cooper has been involved in the club’s three championship trophies, firstly as a player and as coach the last two seasons. “It was a win that was thoroughly deserved,” Cooper said. “North Pine hardly had a shot all night and it was comfortable victory for us. The championship is what the league is all about and we’re seven points clear with two games to go.”

Cooper will now concentrate on winning the Grand Final to complete the double for the second successive season. “We did the double last year and we’ll give it a go again,” Cooper said. “The championship is what we’ve aimed for all season. The best team wins the championship but not always the best team wins the Grand Final. For us this is the big one.”

Cooper paid tribute to several of his players but singled out veteran Urabe for special praise following the win over North Pine. “Taro was fantastic tonight and it was probably his best game of the season,” Cooper said. He’s been with me for 11 years.” Cooper said Rochedale would focus on winning the final two games of the seasons before concentrating on the semi-finals. We want to win our last two games and hopefully I’ll be able to bring back a few of our injured players in the next few weeks,” he said.

North Pine coach Trevor Rohdman was bitterly disappointed with the loss. “It was an even game but Rochedale scored from two good strikes while we didn’t put our chances away,” he said. “They got a good lead in the first half and maintained it well. The odds are stacked against us making the finals now.”

Pine Rivers Utd 1 (D Dacey) Mt. Gravatt 2 (R Hastings, S Salmons)
Half Time: 1-1

Mt. Gravatt made certain it would not be involved in the relegation battle with a hard fought 2-1 win against Pine Rivers at Wendy Allison Park on Saturday night. The loss by Pine Rivers ended its slim hopes of making the semi-final play offs. Mt. Gravatt trailed 1-0 after Pine Rivers opened the scoring through striker Daniel Dacey in the 28th minute before equalising three minutes later when striker Rhys Hastings smashed home a volley following a corner.

Dacey’s opening goal came after a strong team build up by the home side who kept possession for long periods before eventually their regular goal scorer slipped through a gap to score. With the scores deadlocked at half time, Pine Rivers, who needed a win to keep its slim finals hopes alive, threw everything into attack straight from the resumption but couldn’t break down the stiff Hawks’ defence.

Eventually, 19-year-old substitute Steve Salmons, who came on for Hastings, drove home the match winner from close range after superb work from Danny Flaskas who laid off after beating three defenders inside the box.

Mt. Gravatt coach Karl Herdle was relieved with the victory which avoided the threat of relegation. “It was a good win but we were under the hammer for a long time in the second period,” Herdle said. “It’s always tough going to play at Pine Rivers. I’ve been going there for several years and that was the first time I’ve come away with a win. Our tactics worked on the night and the good thing was we never lost our composure. We deliberately conceded them possession in our front third and the closer they came to us they couldn’t play long balls which is their strength.”

Pine Rivers’ coach Joel Hale believed his side should have won the match. “We were all over them, particularly in the second half, but we just couldn’t score,” Hale said. “Their second goal came on a quick breakaway. We should have scored at the other end at the time but we had three or four shots blocked on the line and the last one fell to one of their players who set up a quick breakaway. We’re out of the running for the four now but we deserved to win this one.”

Taringa Rovers 3 (N Kuyper, S Hansen, D Shepherd) Brisbane Olympic 0
Half Time: 0-0

Taringa Rovers sealed strugglers Brisbane Olympics’ fate for the relegation playoffs with a commanding 3-0 win at Jack Speared Park on Saturday night. Taringa, who will be involved with a catch-up match against North Pine on Tuesday, were held scoreless at half time before the home side bagged three second half goals. The opening goal came from striker Nick Kuyper in the 53rd minute when he latched on to a pass just outside the six yard box and drove it into the roof of the net.

In the 76th minute defender Schon Hansen took advantage of another loose ball in the penalty area after the Olympic defence failed to clear a Kuyper free-kick from 20 metres. Hansen was in the right place at the right time to give Taringa some breathing space for his side’s second goal. Substitute Daniel Shepherd had only been on the field 15 minutes when he read the play well and got himself in the Olympic box to latch on to Taringa’s third goal to secure the three points.

Taringa should have had a fourth goal when Kuyper’s substitute Ian Keen missed with a one on one with Olympic keeper Ricky Kruger and then skied the ball after he appeared to be tackled from behind.
Olympic had two players sent off when the game was all but over but according to Taringa coach Joe Fenech it appeared one send off was of mistaken identity. Olympic had its chances to score, one in particular which hit the cross bar with Taringa’s keeper well beaten.

Fenech believes Taringa deserved its win and praised both keepers who produced some telling saves on the night. “The first twenty minutes or so was not the prettiest of football as both sides tried to get the upper hand,” Fenech said. “I thought that Olympic probably edged it during that period, and certainly they were very dangerous on the counter all night. Possession wise we got better and better as the game went on, and certainly we had the lion’s share of possession in our opponents half.

Fenech also praised his midfield, particularly Tom Guttormsen. “Tom was an absolute work horse in the middle of the park until he was replaced by David Forshaw who also made a significant contribution during his 20 minutes up front,” he said.

Brisbane Strikers 2 (S Unsworth, R Tollenaere) Peninsula Power 1 (R Brownlie)
Half Time: 1-0

Brisbane Strikers gain a psychological edge for the upcoming semi-finals with a convincing 2-1 win against a 10-man Peninsula Power at Perry Park on Saturday night. The Strikers’ victory took them to 41 points for the season just one point behind Power with two games remaining.

The Strikers got off to a brilliant start with the opening goal coming after just five minutes when striker Steve Unsworth curled a shot off the far upright into the net. It was the only difference between the two sides in the first period before Royce Brownlie equalised for the visitors on the hour. Brownlie, who was closely marked by the Strikers, found space to get in behind the home side’s defence after being put through a gap by Nathan Kelly.

However, Peninsula Power’s hopes struck a major blow minutes after the equaliser when veteran defender Steve Forshaw was sent off for dissent. With the game on a knife’s edge, it took a brilliant strike from Reece Tollenaere to secure the three points for the Strikers when he controlled a cross on the edge of the box before driving home from 18 metres.

Strikers’ coach Rob Wallbridge believed his tactics to nullify Brownlie in attack paid off handsomely. “We marked Royce Brownlie out of the game,” Wallbridge said. “The only time he got free he scored. I thought we played extremely well and the three points were thoroughly deserved as we were by far the better side.”

Wallbridge now wants his side to concentrate on winning its last two matches before the semi-finals. “We’d like to finish second now and we’re only a point behind Power,” he said. “This was a psychological win for us and it would be another boost if we can get into the play-offs as the second placed side. It looks pretty safe now that we’ll be meeting Peninsula Power in the semi-finals.”

Power coach Terry Kirkham blamed Forshaw’s send-off for his side’s defeat. “Steve was sent off for asking the referee a question,” Kirkham said. “He’s a 38-year-old who has never been sent off and he went up to question the referee and was given a yellow card. Then as he was running back the referee gave him a red card. We’re totally bemused by the send off and at the end of the day it cost us the game as it was only 1-1 at the time.”

2009 Premier League status ensured. Sunday 10th of August 2008 14:36
On behalf of the Board of Directors and members of Mt Gravatt Hawks Soccer Club I congradulate men's senior coach Karl Herdle and all the players on their 2-1 win over Pine Rivers last night which has ensured the club will play in the 2009 Premier league.
This is a remarkable achievement by all involved taking into consideration the squad lost no less than 8 players during the season for various reasons.
Well done boy's you are all a credit to the club.

Premier League - Fixture 19 Review Monday 04th of August 2008 17:07
The top four all won this weekend, with only Brisbane City not confirming a semi-final place. Rochedale were convincing 5-1 winners over Mitchelton, while Peninsula maintained the pressure with a 3-0 win over Souths. Brisbane Strikers secured a semi-final spot with a 2-0 victory over Wolves which dented their finals prospects and Brisbane City similarly put a spoke into Pine Rivers’ hopes with a 2-1 win. Taringa all but secured their spot for next season, defeating Mt Gravatt 1-0, while Brisbane Olympic were unable to take advantage of the Hawks’ loss as they went down to North Pine 2-1.

Points to date:
Rochedale Rovers 46, Peninsula Power 42, Brisbane Strikers 38, Brisbane City 31, Souths United 27, North Pine 25*, Brisbane FC Wolves 25, Pine Rivers United 24, Taringa Rovers 22*, Mt Gravatt 19, Brisbane Olympic 13, Mitchelton 8

* One match in hand

Peninsula Power 3 (R Brownlie 2, C Hagell) Souths United 0
Half Time: 1-0

A double from experienced striker Royce Brownlie helped keep Peninsula Power in the championship running following a 3-0 win at Souths United at A J Kelly Field on Saturday night. Brownlie opened the scoring on the half hour with a 25-metre pile driver which the home side took to the break.

Despite a lack of possession, Peninsula Power defended superbly against the visitors but had to wait until 10 minutes from time for their second goal which Corey Hagell hit into the top corner of the net off a cross. With less than five minutes in the game remaining, Brownlie notched his double for the game when he headed home a perfectly placed cross at the far post from Hagell.

Power coach Terry Kirkham believed his side, which retains second place on the table, were worthy winners despite Souths dominating most of the game. “The boys deserve a lot of credit. They were on a high after coming off a 1-0 win over Rochedale in the Cup semi-final last week and played well,” Kirkham said. “We’ve been concentrating on our defence a lot this season as we don’t have a lot of good ball players like most other teams.”

“But we’ve got a nice mixture of ball players and some that are more physical than others and we’re a very committed side. Souths are a good side and have been on song lately but to be fair we defended most of the game but I’m pleased with the result.” The win kept Power in second place with 42 points, still four points behind Rochedale, who easily accounted for relegation favourites Mitchelton 5-1.

Souths coach Mickey Rooney was delighted with his side’s effort and believes his youngsters remain a strong show for the semi-finals. The loss kept Souths on 27 points, four points behind fourth placed Brisbane City. “We might have lost the game but Peninsula Power defended for 90 per cent of the game,” Rooney said.

“It was only 1-0 with seven minutes remaining and they got two goals on the breakaway. Our guys played tremendously well but couldn’t put the ball in the net. We play Brisbane City next week and like all games until the end of the season it will be another crunch game.”

Rochedale Rovers 5 (C Tabulo 3, T Hansen, S Sergant) Mitchelton 1 (F Mausavakalo)
Half Time: 1-0

Rochedale Rovers virtually sealed Mitchelton‘s fate in premier league with a convincing 5-1 win at Underwood Park on Saturday night. Rochedale, who were coming off a semi final loss to Peninsula Power in the Premier Cup last weekend, retain a four point leader at the top of the table with three matches remaining.

Last season’s champions held a slim 1-0 lead at half time following a goal from defender turned attacker, Trent Hansen, midway through the opening period. However, striker Carl Tabulo proved the hero for the home side bagging a second half hat trick while midfield substitute Scott Sergant claimed Rochedale’s fifth late in the game.

Mitchelton’s only success came from their talented Vanuatu striker Fennedy Mausavakalo who has terrorised many teams in the Premier League this season with his skill and speed.

Rochedale coach Keiran Cooper believes his team was a worthy winner but with only three games of the season remaining he wasn’t getting carried away with the result. “To their credit Mitchelton had a lot of possession and we weren’t at our best in the first half,” Cooper said. “It sounds like a big win but it wasn’t that comfortable. It was a bit nervy at times when they got back to 2-1, but we went on with it in the second half.”

Cooper is starting to get a little concerned with his team’s lack of consistency in recent weeks with the semi-finals just around the corner. “Our fluency has been a bit in and out but that’s probably because we’ve had to make so many changes through injuries,” he said. “Mitchelton battled hard but it was always going to be a tough job for them when they’re playing to avoid relegation.”

Mitchelton coach Enzo Dagostino offered no excuses and was proud of his players’ first half performance. “We matched them in the first half and I thought we were unlucky to be down a goal at half time,” Dagostino said. “They scored early in the second half which was a killer and when they got a third we ran out of steam. We didn’t have any fresh reserves and neither did our reserve grade because we’ve been struggling for numbers through injuries and suspensions.”

Taringa Rovers 1 (N Kuyper) Mt. Gravatt 0
Half Time: 1-0

Taringa Rovers ensured its place in next season’s premier league with a controversial 1-0 win against Mt. Gravatt at Dittmer Park on Saturday night. The game’s only goal came just before the half time whistle when striker Nick Kuyper challenged a Hawks’ defender in the air before slotting home.

Mt. Gravatt coach Karl Herdle claimed the goal came from a deliberate hand ball and was furious with the match official for missing the incident. However, Taringa coach Joe Fenech, who was nearest the action, said neither player hand-balled. “The goal came from a ball which was played over the Mt. Gravatt back-four and Nick (Kuyper) went up to contest and ran through two defenders and scored after the ball fell nicely for him. In the challenge, the ball was caught between Nick’s shoulder and their defender and there was no hand ball from either player.”

Herdle said Joe Fenech later apologised following the goal which kept Mt. Gravatt in the mix for a relegation play-off. “It was like the hand of God,” Herdle said. “The ball went towards our goal and our keeper came out and one of their players punched the ball over the heads of two of our players. We chased the game all night and Taringa had more chances but I thought a draw would have been a fitting result.”

However, Fenech claimed his apology was not for the goal but for the position Mt. Gravatt were left in following the loss. “I know how they feel going through a rough patch,” Fenech said. “It was nowhere near a hand ball but it’s heartbreaking for any side to concede like that just before half time.”

The goal was the only difference between the two sides in the windy conditions and the three points was enough to ease any threat of Taringa being involved in a play-off for relegation.
Taringa’s victory was its sixth for the season and took them to 22 points with a match in hand against North Pine.

In contrast, Mt. Gravatt remains on 19 points in third last place on the premiership ladder with three games remaining. Herdle believed the windy conditions contributed to a poor spectacle. “It was very windy and the field isn’t the best this time of the year but it was a fast game,” Herdle said. “We had a couple of chances to score but the final score should have been nil-all. It wasn’t a good game for the spectators.”

Brisbane City 2 (L Drake pen, G Last) Pine Rivers 1 (D Dacey)
Half Time: 2-1

Brisbane City cemented its claims for a semi-finals berth and all but ended Pine Rivers’ bid with a hard fought 2-1 win at Wendy Alison Park on Saturday night. Pine Rivers got off to a perfect start in its must-win match when striker Daniel Dacey headed home a perfect cross from Chris Roulston for a 1-0 lead after only 10 minutes.

However, City hit back midway through the half to draw level when striker Grant Last was brought down from behind in the penalty area allowing former national league striker Lawrence Drake to score from the spot kick. With 10 minutes remaining to the half time interval, a perfect cross from Anthony Paolini fell nicely for Last to tuck home from close range for a 2-1 lead.

The win kept Brisbane City in fourth place with 31 points from its 19 games and ensured a tough battle ahead for Pine Rivers who are now seven points adrift of fourth place. City coach Rod Brown conceded his side may have been lucky to scrape home with the three points. “It was a big result for us with Pine Rivers breathing down our necks,” Brown said. “We were under the pump a lot in the second half but we had our fair share of chances but couldn’t put them away. “This win puts us four points clear of Souths after their loss to Peninsula Power and I’m confident we can go on now and make the final four.”

In contrast, Pine Rivers coach Joel Hale was dismayed his side let slip a golden opportunity to press for a finals berth in his first season as a premier league player-coach. “I thought we dominated the second half and a draw would have been a fitting result,” he said. “But things just didn’t fall our way on the night and I thought their penalty was very soft. We played well early in the game and deserved to go 1-0 up but it’s going to be tough now to make the finals. Mathematically we can do it but realistically it might be too hard now.”
