Sunday's Game 20th April Wednesday 23rd of April 2008 15:08
Hat-tricks make Flaskas target.
Danny Flaskas scored his second consecutive hat-trick of goals for Mt Gravatt in the side's 4-2 Premier League win over North Pine on Sunday.
Flaskas notched four goals in last week's win over Michelton and has become a player to be feared by opposition teams, having notched nine goals this term.
Mt Gravatt coach Karl Herdle is not concerned opposition teams might ``stack'' players on Flaskas in order to shut him down.
``He already has been getting attention,'' Herdle said.
``We don't mind because while they are hanging on Danny it opens up other possibilities for us. ``As a versatile footballer, Danny is a good provider so they can't shut him down from everything. ``He is the first to admit goals come after lead-up work by support players and not just his boot.''
Mt Gravatt is away to Taringa this Sunday, a game Herdle rated as being as hard as any.
Premier League points: Rochedale Rovers 17, Peninsula Power 16, Brisbane Strikers 13, North Pine 13, Brisbane Olympic 10, Brisbane City 9, Souths United 9, Mt Gravatt 9, Taringa Rovers 7, Brisbane FC Wolves 6, Pine Rivers 6, Mitchelton 1.

YOURBPL AWARDS (ROUND 6) Tuesday 15th of April 2008 14:57

Danny has been named player of the week from the YourBPL.com website The Unofficial Site of Brisbane Football.

Mitchelton Vs Mt Gravatt match report. Monday 14th of April 2008 21:32
Mitchelton 3 (Crack, Wilson 2) v Mt Gravatt 5 (D Flaskas 4 incl pen, A Zaccaria)
Half Time: 3-3

A four goal haul from crafty striker Danny Flaskas helped deliver Mt Gravatt a thrilling 5-3 win over Mitchelton at Teralba Park on Saturday night.

The Hawks’ victory was only its second of the season and ensured Mitchelton remained anchored at the foot of the table and still searching for its first victory.

In a see-sawing first half, Mitchelton grabbed the early ascendancy when striker Daniel Crack put the home side ahead after only four minutes. However, Mt. Gravatt hit back three minutes later to level the scores 1-1 when Flaskas beat two defenders inside the box before slotting home his first goal of the night.

Mt Gravatt's Flaskas tucked home his second for the visitors to take a 2-1 lead on the half hour. Michelton came back and equalised when Matt Wilson ran on to a Jason Poggi flick-on.

Mitchelton again bounced back to steal a 3-2 lead when Wilson also notched a double five minutes from the interval. However Mt. Gravatt midfielder Adrian Zaccaria snatched a late goal one minute before the half time break to again lock up the scores at 3-3

Second half Mt. Gravatt stepped up a gear and hit the lead again in the match when Flaskas notched his hat trick in the 65th minute before tucking home a penalty 15 minutes later to secure a 5-3 victory and a valuable three points.

Mt. Gravatt coach Karl Herdle was grateful for the victory but was livid with his side’s lapses in concentration. “I was annoyed we made some sloppy mistakes but we’re starting to click as a unit now,” Herdle said. “I thought we showed good composure after starting the season slowly.”

Mitchelton coach Iain Fagan believed his side missed a golden opportunity to win its first match of the season. “It was a game we could easily have won,” he said. “There wasn’t a lot between the two sides and it was a good effort from my boys considering we’ve lost a few players lately. It was a big improvement and the boys kept trying right to the end.”

Mt Gravatt Vs Strikers match report. Monday 07th of April 2008 17:20
Mt Gravatt 3 (D Flaskas, A Zaccaria, G Hurford)
Brisbane Strikers 4 (A Shepherd, S Unsworth, L Farinazzo, L Previtera)
Half Time: 1-2

Brisbane Strikers retained top spot on the Premiership ladder following a tense 4-3 win against Mt. Gravatt at Dittmer Park on Saturday night.

Mt. Gravatt, who have secured only three points this season, gave the former champions a huge fright with a sensational comeback after trailing 4-1 on the hour.

Strikers started slowly and found themselves trailing 1-0 when Mt. Gravatt’s Danny Flaskas put the home side ahead with a 25th minutes goal from 18 metres. However, the lead lasted only five minutes before the Strikers hit back to equalise when Andrew Shepherd finished off a great movement with an angled shot from 15 metres.

The Strikers looked well in control midway through the first half and were rewarded for their efforts when Steve Unsworth brilliantly controlled a cross before scoring from close range for a 2-1 lead in the 38th minute.

The Strikers increased its lead to 3-1 in the 58th minute following a sensational 25 metre curling free kick from Luke Farinazzo and appeared to have the match well under control when Liam Previtera made it 4-1 on the hour.

However, the Strikers made a crucial mistake thinking the game was over and allowed Mt Gravatt to claw its way back into the game in the final stages. Mt. Gravatt midfielder Adrian Zaccaria gave the home side a scent of snatching a draw when he scored in the 65th minute before Geoff Hurford made it 4-3 with five minutes remaining with a strong header off a free kick.

Strikers coach Rob Wallbridge was annoyed his side allow Mt Gravatt back into the game after it took a commanding lead. “We only played fair. We sat back on that lead and didn’t want to play and let in two easy goals,” he said. “We will need to address the problem very quickly. It was a fair result but I thought the score line flattered Mt. Gravatt.”

Mt. Gravatt finished the game full of running and only time prevented them from snatching a draw.
Coach Karl Herdle thought his side deserved a draw following its stunning fight back. “I thought we deserved to get something from the game. Only a few lapses in concentration cost us a point. Every time the Strikers scored they followed up quickly with another goal and that’s just concentration. There’s nothing wrong with our game and we had quite a few chances of our own.”

Souths Vs Mt Gravatt Senior Men Match Report Monday 31st of March 2008 22:50
Souths United 2 (B Evans, A Skehan) v Mt. Gravatt 1 (B Longstaff)
Half Time: 0-0

Souths United showed plenty of spirit in the face of adversity when it rolled Mt. Gravatt 2-1 at Wakerley Park on Saturday night.

The home side celebrated the opening of its new Wakerley Park facilities in grand style scoring both goals after the break and after having defender Dave Meli sent off after only 20 minutes. Meli was judged to have made a late tackle on Mt Gravatt midfielder Ray Hastings.

Despite being down a man, Souths managed to hold the visitors until the hour mark when a Ben Evans shot from 25-metres skidded under Mt. Gravatt keeper Anthony Borgo for a 1-0 lead. Gold Coast teenager Ben Longstaff brought the game back on an even keel when he came off the bench and caught Souths keeper James Zammitt napping with a well taken goal equaliser.

Souths clinched the three points with a superb strike from 18 metres by Andrew Skehan who cut inside and beat his defender before sealing victory for the home side with eight minutes remaining. The match took a further twist when Mt. Gravatt skipper Andrew Davidson also was sent off following a bad tackle which earned him his second yellow card.

Souths coach Mickey Rooney was delighted with his players discipline and believed his side thoroughly deserved to win despite being a man down for most of the game. “To play with 10 men for 80 minutes showed we have good discipline in the side,” Rooney said. “We played some tremendous football and we’re a very young side.”

Mt. Gravatt coach Karl Herdle believed his side was up for the three points and the game could have gone either way. “It was an entertaining game for the spectators and Souths have got some good players,” Herdle said. “We had them under control until they got their player sent off. For some reason they lifted and went on the attack more while we made a few crucial mistakes.”

Hawks take Flight Tuesday 25th of March 2008 22:15
Brisbane FC Wolves (1) 2 v 3 (1) Mount Gravatt (FC: Aoci 22, Davidson 72; Hawks: Tomic 15, Flaskas 60, o.g. 73)

Mt. Gravatt recorded their 1st win tonight in the 2008 Premier League, with a 3-2 victory at Carmichael Park over Brisbane FC Wolves. Karl Herdle’s side led three times but were pegged back twice by a determined Wolves team.
Mt. Gravatt played with Archie Tomic up-front with support from Rhys Hastings and Danny Flaskas and it was Tomic who opened the scoring when Wolves defender John Hudson bungled a clearence into the path of the striker who smashed home from distance into an empty net while Ben Wicks bemoaned the mistake.
That goal a quarter of an hour in was closely followed by an equaliser seven minutes later after Sunny Isaac flicked on a header and Cardeau Aoci got to the ball fractionally before both defender and keeper.
Second half saw Hawks dominate whilst Wolves lost direction which lead to both Isaac and Aoci being substituted.
On the hour Ryhys Hastings made two brilliant runs inside 30 seconds; the first culminated in his through ball being cut out and cleared but Wolves failed to keep the ball and Hastings had it again, this time he found Flaskas inside who had time to place a cool finish in the bottom right-hand corner leaving the keeper pretty helpless.
Wade Davidson’s stunner of a half-volley in the 72 minute was quickly overshadowed as the equaliser was wiped out by another defensive blunder a minute later.
A free kick awarded to Mt Gravatt pumped the ball into the box onto the head of Hawks Samuel Haymen which in turn glanced the head of a Wolves defender towards the goal, Wolves keeper Wicks tried in vain to collect the loose ball which evaded him as it nestled in the back of the net to give the Hawks that 3-2 lead that ultimately was enough.
In the last ten minutes Tomic had two more great opportunities with powerful headers narrowly skimming the bar.

FC Wolves coach Sam Saif said he was very disappointed to lose at home after being punished by the Hawks, who like birds of prey pounced on the mistakes by the home side.

''Two schoolboy errors cost us goals. We made two real bad mistakes and we were punished severely for them, that's the way things are going for us at the moment, but we'll turn it around,'' Saif said.

This was a rescheduled match between the sides. The previous game was abandoned after halftime when FC Wolves led the Hawks 1-0. Hawks striker Cameron Hunt was injured and could not be moved from the field of play.

''Like anything it's fate. We were all over them in the first game, it was called off and we come out and lose this one, it's always the way, but full credit to the Hawks for taking their chances.

Hawks coach Karl Herdle praised his team's attitude which he believes broke down the Wolves style of play

"We didn't allow Wolves to play to their game plan and in the end we dictated the pace of the game".

"We have the makings of a very competitive team who are starting to bond and begining to believe in their own ability. To get results they know they have to work hard for each other as we don't expect any easy games in this league"

Hawks next play away to Souths Untited Saturday 29th March 7PM kick off.

Premier League Round 3 Review. Wednesday 19th of March 2008 17:01
Premier League Round 3 Review

Brisbane Strikers sent out a warning to the rest of the Premier League teams that they will be a major threat in this year’s competition when they thrashed Taringa Rovers 7-0 in Round 3 of the Football Brisbane Premier League. Four goals to Steve Unsworth against his former club capped an impressive team performance that sent Strikers top of the table leading into the Easter break.

Rochedale Rovers were held 2-2 at home by Brisbane City and share the lead with Strikers and Peninsula Power who defeated Mt Gravatt 4-2. North Pine also continued their good start to their debut season with a 5-1 home win over Mitchelton.

The Sunday matches saw Souths United defeat Pine Rivers 3-0 and Brisbane Olympic and Brisbane Wolves shared the points in a 0-0 draw.

Brisbane Strikers 7 (S Unsworth 4, R Tollenaere 2, M Carseldine) v Taringa Rovers 0
Half Time: 4-0

A four goal haul from striker Steve Unsworth proved Brisbane Strikers would be a serious premiership force this season with a 7-0 whitewash against Taringa Rovers at Perry Park on Saturday night.

With both sides badly under strengthened through injuries, the Strikers piled on four first half goals to take total control of the match.Unsworth’s efforts were supported by two goals from former national league striker Reece Tollenaere and another from rookie Miles Carseldine, who scored his first Premier League goal in only his third appearance.

Tollenaere got the Strikers off to a 1-0 lead after 22 minutes when he spectatcularly finished off a Carseldine cross from close range. Unsworth then made it 2-0 five minutes later when he struck a powerful header home off a Matt Heath cross before Carseldine ran at the Taringa defence just past the half hour before rifling home his goal from 18 metres. Tollenaere laid off a perfect pass for Unsworth to collect his second of the night just before the break to give the Strikers a 4-0 lead at the interval.

Taringa were completely outclassed by the more skilful Strikers and went down 5-0 when Tollenaere bagged his second goal shortly after the resumption. A misunderstanding in the Taringa defence enabled Unsworth to slot home the sixth goal for the Strikers while the crafty striker completed his four goal haul and the seventh for the visitors following a corner late in the game.,

Strikers’ coach Rob Wallbridge had some sympathy for Taringa even though he was not confident of winning before the game. “It was one of those nights when everything just clicked for us,” he said. “Our support play and finishing has improved a lot and everything we worked on in training came off. Before the game I was worried about winning. Taringa were a little unknown to us and we had about 20 players missing from our senior squads through injuries and the Q League. Taringa also had a lot of players who were unavailable because of injury.”

Taringa coach Joe Fenech tried in vain to halt the Strikers’ onslaught. “In a nutshell the Strikers were magnificent and used the width terribly well,” Fenech said. “In fact if it were possible to bring the sidelines in and make the ground the width of the box we may have had a slim chance.”

Rochedale Rovers 2 (T Smits, A Schiavo) v Brisbane City 2 (E Papadopolos, B McDonald)
Half Time: 1-0

Rochedale Rovers were given an early season fright when it needed to come from a goal down to snatch a 2-2 draw with Brisbane City at Underwood Park on Saturday night. The defending champions went into the clash unbeaten after two wins but had to fight hard to salvage a point against a determined Brisbane City.

Rochedale got off too to a strong start but had to wait half an hour before new A League signing Tim Smits broke the deadlock when he finished off a Steve Carter cross at the far post. The home side managed to take the 1-0 lead into the half time break but City drew level shortly after the resumption when striker Evan Papadopolos finished off from close range.

City’s other striker Brad McDonald then put the visitors ahead 2-1 in the 69th minute when he raced on to a through ball from his fellow strike partner before slamming his attempt into the top corner. Sensing an upset, Rochedale dug deep to protect its proud home record and managed to grab the equaliser in the 75th minute from substitute Anthony Schiavo who beat City keeper Tom Willis in a one-on-one situation.

Rochedale coach Kieran Cooper believed a draw was a fair result although City boss Rod Brown felt his side let three points slip away. “A draw was a fair result. We didn’t play that well and City would have been disappointed had they lost,” Cooper said. “City had a fair amount of possession and played quite well although we probably had the better of the chances in the game. I thought their keeper (Willis) had a good game and he pulled off some good saves.”

Brown was pleased with the result after his side’s previous win and a loss in the opening two rounds. “At 2-1 we gave away a silly goal which probably cost us three points,” Brown said. “It was a fairly even contest but in the end it was a pleasing result. Rochedale dominated in the first half but we fought back strongly in the second half.”

Mt Gravatt 2 (R Hastings, B Longstaff)
Peninsula Power 4 (P Fairgrieve, S Cleary, S Forshaw, R Brownlie)
Half Time: 2-1

Peninsula Power grabbed a share of the Premier League lead for the first time in its short history at top level with a 4-2 win against Mt. Gravatt at Dittmer Park on Saturday night.
Power, who narrowly escaped relegation in its first year in Premier League last season, share top spot with Rochedale Rovers and Brisbane Strikers but are third on goal differences after remaining unbeaten with two wins from its three matches.

Power youngster Peter Fairgrieve, who has been tipped to be a future star, got the visitors off to a perfect start scoring after only 10 minutes. Mt Gravatt fought back to draw level at 1-1 in the 15th minute when midfielder Rhys Hastings caught the visitors’ defence off guard before striker Ben Longstaff capitalised on a quick break to give the home side a 2-1 just before half time.

Despite trailing 2-1 at the break, Power hit back strongly after the interval to draw level when midfielder Steve Cleary smashed home a cross from the right side with a powerful left foot shot from 18 metres. With the game delicately poised Power’s “Mr. Reliable” Steve Forshaw stepped up for a free kick which he executed perfectly to give Power a 3-2 lead in the 70th minute. Power’s new signing, Royce Brownlie then raced onto a pass from Steve Feuerriegel to seal the match .

Power coach Terry Kirkham was once again delighted with his side’s performance but admitted their first half display was below par. “We were pretty ordinary in the first half but we turned it around after the break,” Kirkham said. “We came away from the pre-season playing on good grounds and big pitches and we couldn’t adjust to the smaller Dittmer Park. We couldn’t hit the target and we weren’t playing with any width. Our whole mindset was to go there for three points and in the end that’s what we accomplished.”

Mt. Gravatt coach Karl Herdle blamed lapses in concentration for Mt. Gravatt’s loss. “We fell asleep for the first goal but we came back well and took control,” Herdle said. “Then we went back to sleep again and conceded two goals within seven minutes.”

North Pine 5 (S Coffey 3, M Wheeler, L Aspin) v Mitchelton 1 (M Christensen)
Half Time: 3-0

North Pine continue to surprise in its first season in Premier League with another commanding 5-1 win against Mitchelton at Bob Brock Park on Saturday night.

North Pine, who have been promoted from lower divisions over the past two seasons, ran riot courtesy of a hat-trick from striker Shaun Coffey who bagged his side’s last three goals. The home side’s opening goal in the 25th minute came from a powerful header off Marc Wheeler following a long throw by midfielder Matt Hornby.

Premier League debutant Lloyd Aspin put North Pine ahead 2-0 on the half hour with a powerfully hit volley from 18 metres while Coffey sent his side in at half time leading 3-0 after side footing home a rebound from a Jason Keune shot.

Mitchelton failed to stem the flow of goals after the break when Coffey picked up his second two minutes after the resumption with a header off a perfectly weighted cross from Keune for a 4-0 lead. North Pine made it 5-0 midway through the half following another powerful header from Coffey off a corner by Wheeler.

Mitchelton’s consolation goal came late in the game from a Mick Christensen free kick. North Pine remains unbeaten at home from its two games with its only loss away to Brisbane Strikers.

“We played some very good football after getting rolled by the Strikers last round,” said coach Trevor Rodhmann. “We kept possession well but Mitchelton worked hard all night and it was a fitting reward for them to get their late goal. We’ve got two away games after the Easter break and we’d like to do well in those games and get results before we play the local derby against Pine Rivers at home.”

Mitchelton coach Iain Fagan blamed inexperience for his side’s loss. “We started well enough but then fell apart,” Fagan said. “We responded better in the second half but you can’t put old heads on young shoulders.”
